Famed pianist Andras Schiff and German clarinetist/composer Jorg Widmann team up to play the Brahms sonatas for piano and clarinet. This is just a sample from their CD which features introspective readings of Brahms' classic last works interpreted as genuine duos with each instrument playing an equal role. I'm not sure any other recording of these works (and there are many excellent ones) has quite achieved this equal balance of keyboard and wind voicing.

I think you answered your own question. Most approach these works as soloist with accompaniment.
I often find myself, while watching or listening to "solo" works, thinking the piano player is working harder than the soloist.

Only a total idiot would approach these works as "solo with accompaniment". Virtually every article/master class/lesson I have ever seen over the last 50 years of my life has stressed this, it is hardly a revolutionary idea. Of course even the most well intentioned musicians will have time/rehearsal limitations. Many also have what I'd call "imagination limitations".
This is a fine recording for sure, I'm not debating THAT by any means!

I've always found Schiff to be able to bring out the very best in Brahms. This recording is no exception. It sounds like it was more carefully produced than many others have been so that all of the nuances in the piano could be clearly heard. Thanks for bringing it to our attention!
