 Variable volume clarinet mouthpiece

I came across this today:

It's a pedal operated variable internal volume clarinet mouthpiece system, developed at IRCAM, and played by Alain Damiens and others. Just wondering if anyone had ever come across one? Were they ever in production or just a curiosity? There's no date but I'm guessing 1970's? There's a couple of sound files included too.
