 I know there are many that use this ligature but has anyone played it without any of the plate attachments.  I am beginning to like it.

 There was only one of the plates I liked with it. I've since lost the other two. It had never occurred to me to try it with no plate.  I just did and the tone seemed less focused and less resonant to me. Response was about the same. I didn't record with it or have someone else listen, so this is all just user impression.  Interesting experiment...

 This didn't work for me, but a couple of my students play a Rovner upside down (with the screw etc on the Reed) and this seems to work quite well...

 I didn't mention it because I was particularly interested but rather because the anecdote related to the OP - an example of ligature being used in a way not intended by the manufacturer. I know a very fine player who uses the Rovner you refer to, so I'm sure they're good ligatures.
