Stand For Supporting Instruments While Playing
Author: Reedless

Hello everyone,

I recall seeing at some time a device that can support a clarinet or flute while the performer is sitting with some small stand that sits on the chair between the players legs. Is this still a real thing? I would love to find some kind of device that removes the weight from the instrument, especially the flute. I did some searching here and on Google and have been unable to find anything.

Thank you!

There used to be a device called a "Phred" which did the job you describe, but I never saw it used on a flute. It is no longer made. But there is a discussion currently on this board about a new product called an ERGOclar which basically does the same thing – for clarinet, not flute.

I have a floor spike that is designed to hold a clarinet from the bell socket. Like a Cello spike, you still have to hold up one end of the instrument, and doesn't work on smooth/slippery surfaces, but it takes most of the weight off the right hand.

Here is a link to a video explaining the "ERGOclar support" mentioned above.

We must be on the same page as I expressed similar need a couple of days ago. :)

There's also a link in this thread to Stephen Fox's device and the Claritie.

RDG BHOB is the current version of the Quodlibet FHRED. These are ideal for use with oboes, clarinets and cors anglais.

For flute you'd need something much longer and with an attachment that clips onto the flute body, similar to the Bo Pep thumb and finger saddles.

I use a standard clarinet one. I had someone attach a flat lead disc onto the bottom of it between the "legs" it sits on. Sturdy so won't be knocked over while your away from your chair.
