So I guess we can continue to expect great things from Ms. Uberto

Fairwell everyone. I'm burning my clarinet in the fireplace where it can be put to best use and giving up the instrument.;)

This young lady plays clarinet. Comparatively speaking my etude work sounds more like trying out instruments at the music store.

Double tonguing, circular breathing....if I didn't see the circular breathing I might think that her playing was overdubbed.

I leave this thread with feelings of amazement and inferiority. Excuse me while I seek compassion in my trusty dog.

Well, I hope that was tongue in cheek.

There are a number of established professional clarinetists that will never sound that good!

It is always refreshing to me to see/hear young talent (for the record Uberto is a little older than that now) of that calibre coming up. You need to have a talent pool for the next generation.

If there is some seriousness in that "burning" statement, I'd hasten to add a Michael Lowenstern comment that I appreciated. He said something to the effect that musicianship is NOT like competitive sports. One doesn't measure up to others in fractions of an inch or fractions of a second. We all have are own strengths and weaknesses and the profession (or simply avocation) of music has room for all stripes. I believe he offered up that quote regarding his own realization that there were always going to the certain things that he would never be able to do that he wished he could.

Music, thankfully is an activity that is meant to be enjoyed by the participant as well as the observer.

Not me....I don't have to view the video to answer that. I "got good" to a degree at age 16-17. I don't like watching young kids play solos on social media because it is depressing! In fact, unless someone is pretty much a beginner and posts a video asking for advice, everyone else is some monster player. There are like 1,000,000,000,000,000 of them. Then you think "so I'm like REALLY good-- what does it matter"? I once played the Nielsen (1990). Raise your hand, the millions of you who also have.

Thanks Paul. I'm not burning my clarinet. That was just what I felt after seeing this video, which like Tom H said, can be depressing to watch even if musicianship isn't measure in 1/1000th of a second like Olympic bobsledding, as you and Mike Lowenstern aptly point out.:)

I haven't watched the video yet (I will), but how we play at 13 only really matters when we are 13. How we play at 25 and 35, etc is much more interesting and relevant.

There are plenty of well known pros who didn't even start till they were 12 or 13.

Most prodigies don't keep playing as adults. The ones that we know of are the exceptions.

Hi,

That's lovely that she plays so well.

I really agree with Anders though. I was very advanced in a different field early on, and then dropped out entirely to raise a family. So being brilliant early on doesn't necessarily translate into being best for life, and there is plenty of space for others.

I think it's wonderful that she's doing so well though, and I hope she is enjoying it.

I notice that she uses the knuckle of her right hand first finger to cover the hole, rather than the pad of that finger. I hadn't realised that it was possible to get a good enough seal doing that.

I think I might find it very useful to do that too. I usually position my entire right hand based on the assumption that the pad of my first finger should sit right into the hole. If I move to the knuckle sitting in that hole, then it is much easier to reach the pinkie keys.
