Hi there,
I'm on the trail of a stolen bass clarinet... and it would be useful to know this detail - WHERE is the serial number on a Selmer Bass clarinet? (made in the last 20 years).
I've never had my own instruments stolen, but in the last 10 years have relocated TWO pairs to their original owners, and I think I've sniffed out a bass that was stolen in 2010... NZ is a small country, and a lot of stolen instruments resurface after being tucked away for a few years.

The serial number of my Model 65 is on the back of the upper section just above the lower tenon. Mine has an R04XXX; There may be another mark somewhere under a key that I can't easily see. I picked the bass up at the Selmer factory in Elkhart, IN about 4 years ago. Hope this helps.

Thanks, it helps me to know exactly where it is, a common ploy is to state that they cannot find the number etc, so it is useful for me to be able to state exactly WHERE on the instrument it will be found. Seller clearly knows nothing about bass clarinets or buying/selling wind instruments...

My Selmer bass is older (B series), but the serial is stamped on the back of both the upper and lower joints, right at the bottom, just above the lower tenon, as Hank says.
I've never noticed a "secret" serial number location like on the bell brace of my Selmer tenor saxophone.
If a seller really doesn't know, ask for detailed photos all up and down the back of the instrument.
