Are you familiar with other clarinet forums beside this one? Not that I have any intention of abandoning the Clarinet B Board, which I am fond of and often take part in. The French have a forum and I hear the Germans have an excellent one, but my German isn't up to consulting it often, let alone participating.

Hello Ruben. There is the Clarinet Pages forum, although it appears not to be as active as this one:
https://clarinetpages.info/smf/index.php
You could also check out the Sax on the Web forum. Lots of clarinet discussions there in addition to saxophone.

Yeah Clarinet Pages is OK, but not very active. I believe it is the same as the other Clarinet Pgs. link listed.
I believe the Woodwind Forum is related to Sax on the Web (not sure). It has a fairly inactive following and it the only forum out of the many (on different subjects) from which I have ever been banned....
8notes exists, but almost no action.

On Facebook there are several clarinet forums, including Clarinetists' Advanced Chat, The Clarinet Blog, Clarinet Equipment, and one dedicated to the memory of Ralph McLane and Harold Wright.

Yeah, social media is where most folks go now - any number of Facebook groups alone. However, as we've seen in the past with Yahoo! groups, and are seeing now with all social media...the CEOs/owners can pick and choose what they want to offer at what times and to which people.
Sticking with what has worked for decades has its merits. MySpace came and went since clarinetBB came to be. Same with the Yahoo! Groups, and many other on-line forums/groups/etc.
I love the clarinet BBoard for exactly what it is. (Thanks Mark - Ken, and the late GBK and all those who have worked in the background/foreground over the years to make it happen, and keep it running.)
Warmest Regards,
Fuzzy

I have found this clarinet bboard welcoming, mostly pretty civil and friendly and very informative. It is so stirring to hear the accounts of those who have actually known, performed with or studied under the greats. All those little nuggets of personality and the stories that reveal a lot but which will mostly never be put down on paper elsewhere. The discussions of equipment are fascinating and, more importantly, useful.
Some participating here are also on some of the fb clarinet groups but somehow the simplicity of this site and its ability to stay on topic, the frankness of those who contribute and the sometimes lengthy personal accounts are to me more compelling. Perhaps this is because the kindly and serious tone (no pun intended !) was set 'way back when, before the days of social media platforms and influencers and montetization of videos and photos.
I wish I could say the same about other boards but the couple I've checked out seem troubled with trolls and immature or cynical participants; a pervasive "locker-room" humor is also not conducive to productive discussions about playing music, building/maintaining/restoring instruments or teaching.
Many thanks to those who work to run and maintain this board and to the many generous participants, I have fun and have learned a lot here, and as a result have too many clarinets - but that's for another topic !

I agree about this board being the best. I belong to some of those clarinet facebook groups. There can be some interesting stuff there. Some people post their same article/info. on several at the same time which gets a bit boring. There are a lot of playing videos, which can be nice, but also depressing when you see that there are like a zillion clarinetists that are pretty much top notch. Some of them are even older than 14....

Facebook does have an assortment of clarinet forums. Some of the popular ones seem to be used for self promotion and ego building.

Ed, Agree. All that ego building on the facebook forums with videos is off-putting at times, and somewhat depressing when you see how great everyone is.
I am in the process of putting together a mess of my stuff for Youtube. THAT is where I will do MY ego building.....I even got a DVD-VHS dubbing machine for Christmas. Hey what else to I have to do in retirement?

Yes I find some of the Facebook groups are inhabited by those of a trollish nature. Plus Facebook is plagued with spam.
Regarding the french forum posted above, I am teaching myself french and I was thinking of joining that forum. My phone browser can automatically translate any web page but also I can turn it off.

I've never tried any other forums, but I think it's the people that make this one so good.
There are a lot of people on here who are clearly just giving loads of their time because they love clarinet playing and music. It is such an amazing resource for people who may not have access to good lessons in person.
I know that in my home town, for example, the only music shop has now closed down, and the nearest one would now be 25 miles away. I think it's brilliant that people all over the world (including me) have the chance to learn clarinet playing from home, just by coming to this forum.
I have ended up paying for clarinet lessons for three years from a local teacher and I do love my lessons, but it was this forum that got me started, and often keeps me going when I am stuck.
Thank you to all the regulars for all that you do. :-)

I know what you mean super2dan. I keep buying weird bits and pieces that I don't need from our local woodwind shop just to make sure they stay in business. I'd be up a gum tree without them. The thing they provide that is so helpful is advice and the option to try instruments, but they don't charge for that so I have to find other ways to make sure to give them money. It's quite complicated sometimes. :-)

Sadly many music stores in Lyon (France) have closed too. The ones I used to go to were mostly multi instrument with sheet music and accessories and one even had a repair service, although one very complete guitar store with 2 addresses also closed. However there is a new clarinet place, making that 3 here, and a great slightly less recent used/vintage amp and guitar shop. And we have always had several various string instrument luthiers and repair shops, building and repairing guitars, violons, cellos and string basses. I was encouraged, when I went to one of the 3 remaining guitar exclusive stores to buy a Christmas present for a grandchild (a ukulele, her request), to find a great selection of very serious amateur and professional instruments and the place was packed with customers of all descriptions. I hope people continue to go to real stores instead of trying to buy an instrument sight unseen.
