 Better than a Vandoren M15

I'm the first to cast blame for my playing inadequacies on myself. Still more, I'm far more of the school of thought that advances in play come from careful metronomic study of the classic etude books of our craft, not, say, tweaking ligatures.

Such things might make a difference for really high end players and I'm not opposed to change or knocking such advance player equipment tweaking. ''

Personally, I'm especially open to try new reed designs. But all this said, are there players out there that played a Vandoren M15, then switched say to a Fobes or Behn or some other makers mouthpiece, and were blown away with just how much better they felt it was compared to an M15?

Thank you.

Undoubtedly, some will say yes. Virtually none will then say they won a job on one, while countless players have won playing Vandorens.

Personally, I just won a job in the Army bands playing a James Kanter mouthpiece. I tried playing several Vandorens, Richard Hawkins, Frank Kaspars, Ramon Wodkowskis, etc. I like the BD5 from the Vandorens the best if that is that brand you like. I understand trying mouthpieces is very expensive but if you can I suggest trying some James Kanter pieces. I have never played anything remotely close and my tone and intonation get commented on all the time. Just my opinion though and we all have very different oral cavity make ups.

Best,
KRW

I inherited an M15, but I can’t play it without squeaking. IDK if something is wrong with it, or it’s just too different or what. I was excited to get it because they were all the rage, and I wanted to try it, but that particular one didn’t work for me at all. I thought about selling it, but I don’t have anyone to try it to make sure it’s not a dud (that it’s not just me).

While many play various Vandoren mouthpieces successfully, I think that Fobes, Behn and various other handmade pieces are a considerable step up. Both Clark Fobes and Brad Behn are extremely knowledgeable and easy to talk to. You might consider reaching out and discussing your tastes and needs and see what they can do for you.
