Bundy clarinet (resonite) with a bell ring
Author: Hugues Fardao

Hello,

My Bundy Bb has a ring on the bell. Most of the Bundy I saw on the net or were without bell ring. Mine is an '80s one, I think : serial number 961753, seems to be an '80s number, and I noticed in catalogs from scans on the saxophone.net website that a bell ring appears on Bundy resonite clarinets after 1981, and did'nt have it before.

I tested two Bundy in the shop the day I wanted to buy one, and the non-ringed-bell one was not as good as the ringed one : the one I chose had more core sound, more low frequencies, fater sound.

Anyone have informations about that bell ring and/or the evolution of Bundy resonite clarinets ?

The difference in sound may not have anything to do with the bell ring.

Yes I imagine, so I have to supose some evolution or change in the Bundy 1400 making. I thought all the resonite clarinet of one brand were the same and sounded the same, not like the wooden clarinets.

Likewise with Buffet B12 clarinets - some had bell rings, others didn't.

Hence the "Specifications subject to change" disclaimer in their catalogues - makers will change things all the time.

I've encountered Bundy 1400 clarinets made long before 1981 that had a bell ring. These were usually part of a deluxe outfit that included a large wooden carry-all case and a Selmer Paris mouthpiece. This was actually a very nice setup for the day.

Look for the grey wooden cases with charcoal edge strips and red interiors, and a nameplate that simply says "BUNDY" in serifed block letters.

Bundys of any vintage are somewhat variable in how well they play, and, as with any clarinet, can only play up to the standard to which they've been set up and maintained.

I have a classic ABS Bundy case, but a clarinet with the bell ring and the Selmer Paris mouthpiece that came with. The other clarinet I tested in the shop, and sounded not as good as mine, was without bell ring and came with a Bundy mouthpiece (I tested the Bundy mpc and my Selmer mpc). Well, all these things could, maybe, be the clue.

Thank you very much.
