Does anyone know of any graduate assistantships that are going to be available starting the Fall 2021 semester? I am graduating in the Spring, and am interested in a GA position for graduate studies. I have been looking around on the internet and haven’t had too much luck...

I did my MM in perf. from U. of Regina (Saskatchewan, Canada) decades ago as a T.A. Think they still offer it. Brent Ghiglione, Director of Bands or Dept. Head.

Hi Frenchbow,
During my 30+ years as a university professor, I have sat on many scholarship and assistantship selection panels. There are few things you must consider and they are:
1. You will be competing with many other students for a few if any positions so your musical as well as academic achievements will be under heavy scrutiny.
2. GA positions usually include a tuition waiver and often just a small stipend. A full ride is quite rare and often reserved for someone quite exceptional.
3. There is an expectation that you will do some UG teaching or mentoring. Be sure to highlight any leadership roles you have had in this area.
4. A faculty member will be your supervisor so it is important to see if there is someone that already has the knowledge, training, and skill you hope acquire.
5. The completion of a thesis or recital will usually be required.

PS I have a grandson who had a full ride through graduate school at one of the largest state universities all the way to his Ph.D.; he is now doing a 2-year post-doc fellowship at the medical school of another large state university. A granddaughter is finishing her Master's degree at a major state university and has an assistantship and a stipend. But I've got to be honest, Matthew and Zoey graduated with honors at two highly rated state universities after scoring above the 97 percentile in their ACTs. Graduate school is very competitive!

I got lucky perhaps. Small music dept. (200+ students). Got a full ride, small stipend, and was Asst. Conductor. Did some sectional rehearsals and conducting at concerts, a grad. recital & aurals. 1 year program back then.
