I don't know if it is the same everywhere, but Antenna TV is scheduled to replay a Johnny Carson on Monday, 9/28, 10:00pm (EST) with guest Pete Fountain. Original air date 9/27/84.

Bill,
Do you know the name of the song that Pete played on that episode of the Tonight Show.? At the end of the song he said "Help" and nothing else. I had a DVR recording of the Antenna Tv airing but I seem to have let it be deleted.
It was season 23 episode 143, with Farrah Fawcet, Ryan ONeal.
Thanks

I've heard the song, but can't place it, & no one said what it was. Johnny also said Pete would be back later in the show, and that didn't happen, either. If I figure it out, I'll post it.

I just found this and it may be of interest, a 60-minute biographical documentary.

The show's original airdate was September 27th 1984 and is also designated (for some reason) as 5-231.........if that might help someone track it down.

This is a link to a copy of the performance on Johnny Carson that I was wondering about.
I was just curious if anybody recognizes the song, and if it is on an album?
The show is now on Xfinity cable On Demand, past episodes of the Tonight Show. I think it was added recently.
Thank you

Hi MJE42,
The song is "Shine" you might also find it with "That's why they call me Shine."
Pete recorded it several times - but the style varied a lot depending on with whom he was playing.

Thanks so much Fuzzy. I look into getting that on an album. I only have 4 of his now so I probably need some more.

Three "Shines" from different periods in Pete Fountain's career:
With trombonist Jack DeLaney's New Orleans Jazz Babies probably from the early 1950s--Fountain from pre-Welk days on his pre-Leblanc clarinet (an O'Brien stencil?) playing much in Irving Fazola style:

Playing a Leblanc (LL or Dynamic H?) With Godfrey Hirsch on vibraphone--in the style of Goodman/Hampton/Teddy Wilson, around 1959 or right after leaving Welk:

On the Big-Easy clarinet Leblanc designed for him based on the Dynamic H, Fountain really stretches out with his little big band (the brass are sitting this one out.) Fountain leaves both Fazola and Goodman behind in this one and pretty much crafts his own mainstream jazz style:
