 Corbin bass clarinet resonator

Normally I have a healthy suspicion of new products that claim they will improve my tone or response. So I tried with some trepidation the Corbin bass clarinet resonator.

Basically it is a cylinder of granadilla wood that fits midway on the neck joint of the bass clarinet. On my horn it does the most good right at the tuning slide area so you have to take your neck joint apart in order to insert the resonator.

As I said I was skeptical, but the difference is quite astounding. Position on the neck appeared to make a difference. The greatest change in sound was when I positioned it as described in the last paragraph. Moving it away from that greatly lessened the effect. Three things were improved by the resonator. 1) The sound was bigger, although I could still get ppp in the full range of the instrument. 2) The connection between the octaves and overall response of the horn was much better. 3) The altissimo notes were much less thin and the range was extended by a couple notes.

I'll be interested to hear from others that have tried it.

When I bought mine there were two in stock. I'm sure they can make more.

I would be interested in the difference for a listener.

Does the neck still fit in your case?

Snake oil. Save your money for some good reeds.

David, I thought the same until I tried it.

Don't judge it yourself, instead ask your audience if THEY hear a difference. Humans have an amazing capacity for self-delusion, especially when they've spent money on a product.

I think with a lot of these gizmos that you could just duct tape a rock on your instrument and feel a similar difference. Sax high mass screws, LefreQue, flute head joint crowns. I think Cannonball used to sell Sax necks with stones mounted on them.

The danger with these add-on weights, of course, is that if the audience is revolted by your performance and throws you into the water with your instrument, you will sink faster and die more quickly.

$200 seems like such a high price though. Is it not merely a simple hollow cylinder made of wood?
