I have come across an R13 that has the serial number only on the top joint - it is missing from the bottom joint.
The owner tells me he had it from new and this was how it was purchased.
Any ideas?

As far as I know, they all come from the factory with the serial number on both upper and lower joints. I have replaced upper joints. The last time I did this the shop in Jacksonville offered to put the same serial number on for me. I don't know how long they have had this capability.
It is less common to need a lower joint replaced. If the clarinet was purchased as a new clarinet, perhaps there was an accident before it was purchased or a defect was discovered and the lower joint was replaced.
If it was purchased used the lower joint might even be from a different make or model.

I bought a 1940s "pre-R13" and the lower joint was missing most of the serial number. It had clearly been stamped on early in the life of the joint prior to the creation of the tenon, but placed a bit low, so that most of it was lathed away, leaving just the top half of the number. I wondered if the joint had been shortened at some point, but the tenon showed no sign of this. I'd always assumed that stamping serial numbers would be one of the last steps in manufacturing, but that clearly wasn't universal practice in the 1940s.
