Greetings, as we all know if we try to record ourselves playing on an iPhone the sound is pretty horrible. I have the iPhone X, similar to the iPhone 11. Is there a mic you can buy that pugs into that charging port on the phone that might sound decent? Am I better off buying some sort of inexpensive recording device from a place like Guitar Center? If so, what system sounds decent, but won't cost thousands of dollars? Maybe around $500 or less. Thanks for all of your help! Bob

For $500 or less you could get a nice condenser microphone (AT2020, say) and an iPhone-ready audio interface such as the iRig Pro I/O. If you don't need the easy portability of an iPhone-only microphone, this will let you customize things later on and/or use other devices (such as a laptop).

I strongly recommend the VERY simple VERY high quality recorders from Zoom.
The Zoom H2N is an all in one system. You can record onto an SD card or use USB 2.0 to download directly onto computer. You literally just set it down and the room and press record.
You still want to be 10 to 15 feet away from a clarinet to pick up critical room interactions and maybe set the audio to custom making sure the peaks of your loudest recorded sounds don't make it flash in the red. BUT, other than that you don't have to worry about microphones, interfaces, DAWS (digital audio workstations) or any of that.
Sure you can get better sounds if you have better and better separates (mics, pre-amps, digital converters) but you can also sound much worse with that stuff if you are not very very well acquainted with how to make all that stuff sing properly.

Agree with Paul.Also plug a headphone (I have the audio-technica M20X and M50X Monitor) press Rec Active and you can hear how you REALLY sound.

I love my Zoom H4N. For quick and easy with great sound quality (especially when run on batteries - no line noise). It's not quite studio quality, but it is a handy tool to have. The recordings I've heard from the H2N sound great too.
That's about the limit of my experience though.
