I am aware that few schools offer bass clarinet majors. However, I have heard of some that do. Can anyone provide a list of schools that DO offer majors in bass clarinet (preferably in or around Texas)?

This is news to me. What does a degree in Bass Cl. do for you?-- If you're good enough you may play professionally anyway. Then again, I guess you could say that about any performance degree.

I can't offer you any helpful advice regarding colleges but I can say this- focus on the teacher, the list of GOOD bass players has grown over the last 40 years, but the list of AMAZING bass players is still relatively small.
If I were to study bass I'd find a way to study with Jon Russell - this guy REALLY knows his stuff, and how can I put it... it's a good sign that he doesn't waste a lot of effort on self promotion via social media.
Does he teach at a school that offers a bass clarinet major? I don't know but you'll find a way around that... He doesn't claim to have written "the most advanced clarinet book", but he's world class, and in a league with a handful of people who really know what they're doing.

That's a good question. When i taught at Peabody i taught bass clarinet and clarinet but we only had a major in clarinet. The school allowed all clarinet students bass clarinet lessons as a second instrument for two semesters and I allowed all of my clarinet majors to continue taking lessons on both if they wanted to "specialize" in bass as a clarinet major. Since I retired I don't believe they continued that policy. Any school that has a professional bass clarinet player as one of the clarinet teachers should be able to offer bass clarit net lessons to a clarinet major. Check out the faculty in the universities in your state. You have to be proficient on both instruments to win an orchestra position.

Juilliard used to have a Bass Clarinet major, but I don't know if that is still the case since Dennis Smylie passed away.

There aren't many bass-clarinet only jobs if any. The only ones I can think of are as a solo career or maybe military band bass clarinet. My teacher Kal Opperman, required us to know all Eb, Bb and bass orchestral parts. I have many Eb and Bass orchestral parts in my library. Get in touch if you would like copies.

It hasn't had a bass clarinet major for at least two decades (probably much longer). But students may take some auxiliary lessons with experts paid for by the school. The late Dennis Smylie was one of these auxiliary teachers.

In a 2015 dissertation (The Changing Role of the Bass Clarinet: Support for Its Integration into the Modern Clarinet Studio), Jennifer Beth Illes reported that the following institutions offered specialized programs in bass clarinet:
Amsterdam Conservatory (Netherlands), Milan Conservatory (Italy), Boston Conservatory (USA)--a graduate program, Paris Conservatory (France)--a masters program. If you google search that title by Jennifer Beth Illes, you can read the entire dissertation online; it's a good summary of how far the bass clarinet has come historically. One more program that is probably too new to be included in her work is the one-year professional studies diploma in auxiliary wind instruments run by Jeff Anderle at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. You can contact him at janderle@sfcm.edu for more information. I only play soprano clarinets so I didn't pay much attention when I saw a notice about at least one more bass clarinet college program on David Blumberg's International Clarinet blog a few months ago. If you have the time you might try to search back on that site and look for it.
I would imagine, though, that Jeff Anderle would be able to tell you much about such programs in the US and elsewhere.

the only thing that I can add is that you might want 2 develop great tone quality on bass through out your bass clarinet career - my college band director was big on tone quality bcoz he preached that if you don't have a characteristic tone quality then no 1 is going 2 want 2 hear u

You'd have to play some clarinet but Calvin Falwell at the University of South Florida takes bass clarinet primary student.
