What composers also played the clarinet? By this, I don't mean people that were first and foremost clarinetists and composed mostly, or exclusively for their instrument: Crussell, Cavallini, Cahuzac, Baermann, Klosé, etc: I find Crusell the most interesting of the lot as a composer.
I mean full-fledged composers that wrote symphonies, string quartets, operas, etc., and that also played the clarinet. I can only think of four: Villa-Lobos, Hindemith (the clarinet wasn't their main instrument, but they played it) and in recent times: John Adams and Jörg Widmann. Any others?

Is this the Ray Charles who was a major force in the Rhythm and Blues, Gospel, and Soul music world? He was blind and usually seen at the piano keyboard singing and conducting. His performances regularly made the Billboard 100 hit list, and his renditions of "Georgia on My Mind," and "I Can't Stop Loving You," known and loved by fans all over the world are considered R&B classics. Greenspan played in a band with Leonard Garment-both on tenor-who would later serve as Nixon's personal counsel and, oddly, Moynahan's aide.

I'm a contemporary composer and I play the clarinet. This helps me score/write for all the clarinets that I use in my pieces.
Although I wasn't a student of his, Professor Joseph Carlucci was a clarinet player as well.

William O. Smith/ Bill Smith also Paquito d'Rivera. Many jazz clarinetists might qualify but d'Rivera has published chamber music.
