Hello, I've read that Paquito and Ken Peplowski use White Master reeds on their mouthpieces. Did anyone try this reeds on Boehm mouthpiece and what are your thoughts? Are they softer or harder in comparison with Vandoren Traditional or V12? I'm asking because I found one older reed that is german cut, and i tried on M15 mouthpiece, but it was to soft (2.5). But, feeling was great and looked like mouthpiece had a longer facing comparing to standard Vandoren.

So I have had a lot of experience with the German cut Legere on Boehm mouthpieces (same size as the Vandoren White Masters). The big issue is whether it covers the window side to side. In most cases it should (just barely). If not, then they won't work (my Clark Fobes mouthpieces are too wide to work with German reed sizing).
As for strength, you'll notice that German cut is shorter and more chisel like. This causes the German reed to be stiffer than the same number for Boehm cut reeds.......about a half strength. In the end you'll have to figure that out, but it should only take a few stabs at it to get it right with cane. The search for the right strength of plastic reed is much more involved.

if i remember right, Paquito D’Rivera is/was using VanDoren White Master after the online recommendation from Ken Peplowski. I admire both players, I might prefer Paquito’s clarinet sound, though I use the same Portnoy mouthpieces as Ken P.
I’ve tried white masters, strength 3, on my BP02 and BP3, (and on other mouthpieces Selmer Hs** and Vandoren B40) and they work well and, to me, sound good, though I don’t know if they are all that noticeably different, sound wise, from VD “ Traditional” blue box reeds. I had no issues with the narrowness, response was fine across all pitch and dynamic ranges.
Hope this is some help, and that we both mean the same thing re, “Boehm mouthpiece”

Both his instruments and mouthpiece(s) have custom work done by the late Kalmen Opperman which must work well with the German cut.

Yes, Boehm mouthpieces for french cut reeds. So, if I play on Vandoren traditional 3.5 reeds, adequate White Master would be strength 3 ?

Again, a good start, but you have to figure that out. A lot changes with different lengths of facings. But with cane reeds you try a few out and you'll know right away.
Also, it is best to find the most stable point (best position) for the mouthpiece to rest in your mouth. For many, it would be snugging up to the point JUST BEFORE the only sound you get out of the combination is a squeak (usu. found by inserting more and more mouthpiece while playing open "G" until it squawks, then backing off slightly from there).
You mention trying the German reed on an M15 but don't say that is your usual mouthpiece. I'd also suggest using the mouthpiece you're most comfortable with and getting a German reed strength that works on that.

If buying White Master, try to get the ones marked "White Master Tradition", as they changed the cut some years back, had 10000 complaints, then brought back the old cut with the new designation.
Most people I've met who used German cut reeds on Boehm mouthpieces played on the Black Master, not the White Master. Yes, they found some mouthpiece windows too wide at the tip.
I have personally found the different in "relative strength" to be more like 1 whole size, not half (ie when I played on 3.5 V12, #3 Black Master/White Master was still way too strong) but this may vary due to many factors (ie the player, the weather etc).
