 H. Bettoney with screwed-on pads

Hi all...

I came across a H. Bettoney metal clarinet. The lower 4 pads are attached with a screw (and a metal ring).

Anyone know the purpose of this technique?
The clarinet is old, before 1945.

This is how flute pads are installed. Some modern clarinets use this technique on certain pads. I suppose it keeps the center of the pad from bulging out.

Thank you, Stephen.
That's a possibility. I have never seen it before though...
