 Studying mouthpiece refacing
Author: Al_Martinez23

Hello everyone,

I’ve always been a massive equipment fanatic especially when it comes to mouthpieces and I’ve always wondered where/how i could be able to study mouthpiece refacing. Does anyone know of any programs or anything that can guide me towards learning such a skill? Any tips can help!

There will be lots of good suggestions I'm sure, but one I'll throw out is to contact Frank Cohen (formerly of the Cleveland Symphony orchestra). He got so adept at refacing that he was known to adjust his mouthpiece in the middle of a performance.

Theo Wanne has a book specifically about this subject:

I can set you up with the basics, then maybe make a few videos along the way.

Hi Bob,

Ya know, I think you could easily produce a book like Theo's and it wouldn't hurt your refacing business a bit. Why? Because, through my own numerous failures, refacing is, IMHO, definitely an art. A person either has the skill which can be developed or they don't. (I'm in the latter group!)

Dan and Paul! This is quite an honor coming from you both. You both are very talented and I know this came from your hearts. Thank you! Thank you!

Let me think about this. There is a very good friend in Canada named Paul who might help me write something special. He's a superb write, and I am not! I am a good photographer so I can take some excellent illustrations.

I also want to do some reed teachings as well. I'm just finishing up on a barrel design. Maybe I need to do this book. Thanks again Dan and Paul.

Hey Bob,

I just got through doing another search on the Internet.

Theo Wanne has the only book available. ($25.00 for 16 page book with color pictures on every page along with written instructions. However, it's all about sax mouthpieces. Therefore, IMO, there are no books available on clarinet mouthpiece refacing.)

Tom Ridenour has the only YouTube video on clarinet mouthpiece refacing.

This looks like a real opportunity for you, Bob!

Feree’s tools still sells the Erick Brand Band Instrument Repair Manual. It has a chapter on refacing and shows a clarinet mouthpiece in the illustrations. It is very basic but is a good start.

Older editions of the book had some clarinet and sax facing schedules in them. Ralph Morgan published them in Sax Journal in one of his articles. I never found them very useful. I found the need to use more feeler sizes and more precise numbers to get nice facing curves. Measurements I have made on new condition mouthpieces did not agree with the published numbers very well.

I know Frank a little bit - he was my son's teacher at Cleveland.

The answer is yes. :)

In the following article written by Scott Kurtzweil, some basic facing information is given that I have not been able to find anywhere else. Scroll down to Mouthpiece Numbers (What do they mean?) – Part II: The Slope.

Perhaps Frank Cohen knew the facing "sections" intricately.
