 I'm interested to buy a Buffet e-flat clarinet for the modest sum of 350 euros-second-hand of course. It has no serial number. What does that mean? I have in my collection an excellent Leblanc B-flat and the reason it has no serial number is because it is a prototype (the keys are neither nickel nor silver-plated).

 Guy Chadash once sent me a Bflat clarinet without a serial number. It was an instrument he had just made and he hadn’t put the serial number on yet. When I bought it he asked me to ask my tech to put the number on. I never did, so the instrument has no serial number. 
But I imagine a Buffet without a serial number has a different story.

 It usually means it was made before 1885. Not necessarily a bad thing but check the intonation carefully.
