Really happy to see a company like D’Addario develop their own synthetic reed. Perhaps Vandoren will have to develop one of their own too, if they haven’t started already.

Wonder what chemicals they will be using this time? The cane reeds are full of chemicals and pesticides. As I've continued to write about them through many years now they've never even tried to sue me! Not once, because their reeds are full of pesticides and assorted chemicals. The lawsuit will end in a few months. I'll keep everyone posted. I turned down $328,000 Rico offered. See I can't write stuff like this unless it's true! I'm asking for triple of this amount plus medical for life. One serious medical issue can cost over 1 million dollars, so this is why I am demanding medical for life. Read on -
Most plastics can be toxic. Very toxic during production as the plastics are heated and mixed. People wearing dentures sometimes have skin reactions to the plastic. When you buy a new house and a new car it is required by law now that these companies must post that parts of cars and house have cancer causing agents in them. Why do they have to post these. People have died or have gotten very ill.
Avoid this company. Rico doesn't care, I suffer everyday because of them. Be careful fellow friends. I care about all of you on this board. And worldwide.

I have to add something here. D'Addario's address is 8484 San Fernando RD. Sun Valley, CA 91352
Ask them for the list of chemicals AND ALL side effects of there new plastic reeds. They are required by law to provide this information. As I've said many times don't take my word for this, do your research.

Have you contacted the other makers of synthetic reeds to find out what they use?

Has anyone tried the D'Addario 'plasticover' coated cane reeds ? The upper half is black ! (Guess they saw that DreamReeds was doing that - but a clear treatment - to their reeds for resale and decided to do it themselves.)

Those plasticizer have been around for ages. They were originally Rico, but after D'Addario purchased them they have been rebranded.

I remember trying the Plasticover reeds back in the 1980s, along with the Fibracell. All I can say is...I sure hope technology has advanced a lot since then (which it has). Back then, the plastic cover would come off after (what I thought to be) a short time. The Fibracell reed was actually a little better, but still had a lot to be desired compared to cane. Again, this was several decades ago, and I'm sure their products today have little resemblance to those earlier versions.
Still, the rather poor experiences of my youth really have killed any desire I had towards synthetics. I should probably try Legeres or these other options, but I just can't get over those early experiences.

Yes, the early attempts were just awful!
Even the early Legere were far less effective. Things have come a long way.

Djudy - I worked there and the black coating is so toxic the people spraying the black coating on the reeds have to wear respirators. Players sometimes complained about their lips tingling, a reaction to the chemicals. As far as I know this was or is the only side effect to the plastic, but the reeds have pesticides on them.
The person who developed this coating was a very nice man named Herman Hanson. He was with Rico for over 40 years before retiring. He got paid for each reed. Back then the cane was washed in hot water and baking soda. Thankfully Herman didn't have to experience pesticides.
