After playing with Clark Fobes' Eb extension for a week, I must say that everyone who plays Eb should get one. It really does make a huge positive difference.

I liked what it did to the timbre, but not what it did to tuning, so I sold mine after about a year.

Maybe the results are different on different models of clarinet. Mine was a Patricola.

Well (here goes) on my Patricula Eb it made a minor difference on tone, but a major improvement on intonation. The 3rd line D was so out of tune I had to use the throat tone G3 key to get it close, but with the extension, I rarely have to do that. Intonation in general was improved, too. Like bmcgar said, different clarinets, different results.

I picked up a battle-worn Bundy Eb for cheap, and hot-rodded it with a Fobes barrel and extension, and with a B44 it is quite a lovely instrument; intonation is actually very good. I got the extension Clark makes for Selmer Eb clarinets but the Bundy tenon was too big for it; Clark kindly offered to ream it to size for me, and it now works great. I really like doing business with Clark, btw.
