 Chasing off tigers

KDK, in another thread, wrote, "I always find this discussion relating to oiling or not oiling to be frustrating. I don't remember reading anything here that cited any kind of observational study of the actual effect of oiling."

Same holds true for posts about temperature control, swabbing mouthpieces, breaking in and storing reeds, oiling keys, and dozens of other things.

Most of the "rules" I see here about such things remind me of the old joke in which a guy is standing on a table yelling, "TIGERS, STAY AWAY!."

When someone asks, "Why are you yelling 'TIGERS, STAY AWAY!'? There isn't a tiger within a couple thousand miles," the guy on the table says, "Well, then it must work!."

Everyone talks, nobody really tests.

Somebody did test. It was in a thread awhile back. They soaked an old barrel in oil for a year or so, and then sawed it in half to see whether the oil had penetrated, and reported that it did not seem to have. The problem with any kind of rigorous test, though, is that to do it scientifically, you would have to play roughly equally on multiple clarinets that you treat in different ways over several years, controlling for possible variations in the behavior of individual billets of wood. It isn't really a realistic proposition. I'd tend to trust the experience of long-time techs such as Caroline, in one of the other threads, over opinions and sawing parts in half, simply because they see instruments that have been treated all sorts of different ways, and what the results have been.

I've come to believe that at least 30% of what I was taught (pertaining to clarinet) in formal education was superstition at best.

I call it the vitamin effect: "Well, I think I feel better since I started taking the vitamins." (Then, a few months later...the person isn't taking the vitamins anymore and says, "Yeah, at first I thought they worked, but now I'm not too sure.)

There's always someone out there selling vitamins though...and always people out there buying them thinking they "might" be helping.
