Hello everyone,

can anyone please give me info about the Vandoren 66? What is the exact tip opening, facing length etc.

Looking forward to your replies

I don't know what that is. What series is it part of?
ou can look up the facing specs (at least, the tip opening and length) for Vandoren mouthpieces at https://vandoren.fr/en/clarinet-mouthpieces/. But I don't see anything there called a "66."

Hello Karl,

the Vandoren 66 is an old mouthpiece, it dates back to 1970's if i am correct. That's why i am asking. It's difficult to find such an old vandoren chart

The Vandoren 55 and 66 mouthpieces were open at the tip, probably around 1.20 mm or more. As I (dimly) recall, the 55 had a somewhat shorter lay--something like a Selmer S facing--and the 66 was even more open with a longer lay, more like a Vandoren 5JB. The 55 and 66 were probably intended for commercial and jazz performance more than for conservatory students and classical players.

Yes indeed, here in Greece we use open mouthpieces for our traditional music. I have found the Vandoren 66 in pretty decent condition and i like it a lot. I use the Vandoren B45 Lyre and i think that the 66 is close to it. That's why i would like to find the exact tip opening. Maybe i can measure it...

Well if needed, you can send it to me and I'll be happy to measure it and send it back the same day.

Here are some old Vandoren clarinet mouthpieces in old Vandoren brouchure, but without measurements. As you can see, 66 was the most open at that time and had a long facing.

FWIW, the modern B45 and B46 are 1.195 and 1.175 mm respectively. And those are listed in Jura82's old brochure as "Medium" tips!

But then, their apparently newest jazz facing, 7JB, has (it says in the newer brochure) a tip opening of 1.70mm!!

Greg_Greece, one of my favourite mouthpieces is B45 Lyre and I play classical with It, really works. It has centered tone and flexibility. This time I found a Vandoren 66 and decided to order It as It seems a good old blank, although not sure If will fit my classical playing. Some online saying It's similar but more open to B45. Γειά σου πατριώτη!

Times change.

Today someone might refer to a "Vandoren 66" sarcastically as a pretty hard Vandoren VK synthetic reed; "60" being the hardest commercially available one.

I actually ordered the mouthpiece Vandoren 66. No idea how will play. I've heard It's similar to B45 with a more open tip. The blank back then was definitely better quality as I've experienced with my B40s. I have an engraved one and a modern one, and the old one plays better in every way.
