 Secure international shipper?

Does anyone have experience with shipping clarinets from Europe to the US? The contenders are FedEx, UPS, and DHL. and I am seeking the most fastidious shipper who can deliver an undamaged instrument.

I've used all three (and Estafeta) for fragilebitems. Either pack them yourself or by a professional packer. A pro will wrap in plastic , double box with cushioning between the boxes, and wrap with filament tape. That keeps them in good shape until your friendly customs inspector destroys the packaging.

My espresso machine made it through customs. Barely. The outer box went missing, but someone used half a roll of filament tape to tape the remains of the inner box and padding to the coffee machine. Hell of a job getting the tape & glue off the machine.

YMMV.

I've had them shipped here three times, twice with DHL and once with FedEx. No problems any of the times. Going the other way, I've used FedEx twice, and the last (!) time, it was stuck, supposedly in German customs, for 10 days, and I had to call FedEx three times to finally get someone who could shake it loose.

I ship all over the world now. So it depends on the country. FedEx is usually the fastest to most countries, but it might cost a tad bit more, just a few dollars, compared to the United States Postal Service. I just sent 16 mouthpieces to Korea and they got them in for days costing $60, FedEx. With a different shipment USPS was $54 and it took 15 days. So the people in Korea were very happy. In Chili UPS messed up and the person never got the package. I had a friend ship it from France and he got it. I'm surely not picking on UPS. They are very good. This was just one example. I ship to Canada and sometimes Mexico using UPS. I'm most happy with the speed of FedEx.

A joke - UPS and FedEX decided to merge together and become one company. It's now called Fed-UP. Maybe I should stay with music and not tell jokes.

I have shipped all over the world for over 20 years. 57 different countries, all continents except Antarctica.

DHL has become my favorite shipper by far, for speed and ease of use. They also have great websites that actually help you ship internationally (as opposed to the others).

For me, DHL wins hands down. I wish they shipped domestically in the U.S.
