"I saw clarinets like this one in the hands of Greek folk players. I even saw new simple system instruments for sale in some music shops in Thessaloniki!"

Musicians from Greece, Turkey and the general area of the Balkan states use clarinets tuned in G or C as well as the usual Bb and these are often simple system instruments. Likewise, jazz players sometimes favour the simple system instrument because some consider it more supple. Early simple system clarinets used fewer rings around the tone holes, which enables the half-covering of holes to aid in musical "decoration".
