Hello!

New user here, in desperate need of help.

A friend is offering me this clarinet, but I have no idea what kind it is?! She says it is very old but can't find any names or brands on it. Any ideas?

Thank you!

It is a simple system (key work-wise).

It is hard to tell from the photos, but it looks somewhat short - how long is the assembled clarinet without the mouthpiece?

It's a simple system instrument. Before pitch was to some degree standardized instruments came in a variety of different pitches, and this instrument may be old enough to predate the standardization of pitch. There was a period where instruments were made in either high pitch or low pitch, and low pitch has become the standard. High pitch instruments will not tune satisfactorily with a modern ensemble. It may be marked HP or LP somewhere.
Either way, this is not really a suitable instrument for a player who intends to progress musically to greater things. The simple system of keywork has been almost completely superseded by the more common Boehm system. Unless you are specifically looking for a simple system instrument or an interesting ornament I'd avoid this one.

Thanks for the replies! I'm fascinated by the history of clarinets, so this interests me only as decoration. Thanks again!

I saw clarinets like this one in the hands of Greek folk players. I even saw new simple system instruments for sale in some music shops in Thessaloniki!

"I saw clarinets like this one in the hands of Greek folk players. I even saw new simple system instruments for sale in some music shops in Thessaloniki!"

Musicians from Greece, Turkey and the general area of the Balkan states use clarinets tuned in G or C as well as the usual Bb and these are often simple system instruments. Likewise, jazz players sometimes favour the simple system instrument because some consider it more supple. Early simple system clarinets used fewer rings around the tone holes, which enables the half-covering of holes to aid in musical "decoration".
