I've used a couple of Behn mouthpieces for six or seven years but am now experimenting with an M30 which plays about the same but may be a bit more reed friendly. What about you?

In addition to my Behn mouthpieces (the old Artist model and the current Epic HCV), I really like the Vandoren M30D on the CSG.

I don't know about other CSG players, but, though it is a hybrid "German-esque" design, I would categorize it as having a very clean/clear sound that is more "neutral" than either "dark" or "bright".
Currently, I play Backun MoBa Arabesque mouthpieces. I've played mostly Zinners over the last 20 years or so and prefer the flexibility of more open facings. In particular, I've found that this facing with Pilgerstorfer Dolce #4 reeds is very reed friendly. With this combination, I can find/adjust reeds to be anywhere from "brilliant" to "warm/dark" and they have nice resonance.
Unfortunately, Backun no longer makes them. I tried the Backun-Hawkins Vocalise Model H mouthpiece and it was very nice. It had a darker sound and a somewhat different feel than the Arabesques using the Dolce 4s. If I had to I felt I could with to them and be satisfied.
I also use Backun "Fatboy" barrels (56.5 and 55.5 mm) with both A/Bb clarinets. I feel these focus the sound a bit and make it somewhat smoother than the stock barrels.
In the past I have tried other mouthpieces such as the M30, B40 and Kessler-Backun Type III, BD5 and Fobes Europa 4. They all worked OK, but the Arabesques seem to make it easier to produce the results I'm after.
As you probably have discovered, most CSGs seem to be somewhat flat in the throat (E and F particularly) and without the low E/F correction key, these notes can be flat as well. Personally, I don't find this to be a horrible problem (I do use special fingerings to compensate), but I would recommend considering mouthpieces that tune to 442 rather than 440 or using a shorter barrel (54-55) so that you might have some flexibility in dealing with this characteristic. This could be important with mouthpieces like the M30 and the BD5 whose 13-series versions tune rather flat.

Bob,
I could not agree more, and..............
How did you get your hands on short Backun barrels?!!? I was looking desperately, about ten years ago and was told NO by Backun at the time.

Paul I see them on Reverb a lot. Fat boys, MOBAs and even a traditional, meant for the CSG’s.

I guess that is a good thing. It came a little late for me. I'm now fully R13ed.

Paul,
First, thanks for helping me decide on CSGs!
Mine are now 13 and going strong!
Second, I got studio CSG barrels from Backun—just had the right sizes at the right time. Oddly, I think I’d only need a 54 for a 13-series BD5 (I have one though from Scott ??? who had them special made for the CSG)

Backun has always made CSG length barrels...I had a couple of the ringless ones with my first set of CSG's, and they even made me a MoBa for the Bb that worked wonderfully.
Most recently they made a CSG version of the new Lumiere barrel!

The point is moot but it DOES still bother me a bit. When I personally contacted Backun Musical services ten years ago (maybe 14 years ago) they told me the shortest barrel they could muster was 64mm. But I am very VERY happy with my Allan Segal barrel.
In all fairness just about everyone else who made barrels back then rebuffed my request so it was not just Backun being flakey.

Could’ve been developed later. I would assume you’re not the only one who asked about a compatible barrel if they had none available at the time.

I have a Paulus and Schuler zoom barrel for my CSGs (which works really well on both the Bb and the A). I got it to replace my seven Yamaha barrels of various lengths. But the icing on the cake, for me, is that it has a little more ping than the factory barrels.

Hey Dan,
Is your Paulus barrel specifically meant for the Yamaha, or is it a modified German barrel? Also, what is the shortest dimension (zoomed all the way in)?

Paul,
I bought my zoom barrel from Eric Black. I believe he had custom ordered two from Paulus, kept the one he liked better, and put the other up for sale. The shortest length is 54 mm.

Thanks guys!
That's good to know. And a perfect starting point for the length of the barrel!

Hello Dan I switched over to a Selmer Concept facing with no tuning issues..alas I do get to pull out but have found my tuning far more accurate than jumping around buying after market stuff. The CSG does tend to play a bit low on some throat notes..but remember in ensemble so do flutes and oboes as well. Also the concept selmer is very even and works well with to 3 and 3.5 vandoren in all the vandoren types of reed..this experience is not the same for something like a B40 which really never seems to work with V21 reeds for me. So Dan give it a shot. being flat is no fun but the advantage of just being able to pull out at the barrel is much better than some endless mouthpiece search

There's a CSG Zoom barrel for sale on a certain well known website.
