Daddario Reserve mouthpiece and Legere European reeds
Author: Jura82

Hello everybody, I'm using Reserve X25e mouthpiece and Legere European Cut reeds, strength 3.75. Today I was cleaning my mouthpiece and saw imprints of reed on both rails and mouthpiece table. Does this mean that reed is slowly destroying mouthpiece rails and wears it out? The mouthpiece plays the same like always, but this imprint is bothering me.

Sorry for my bad English, because it's not my primary language.

Maybe. I've heard that from a few others. I used Légères exclusively for about a year and didn't notice any wear on my mouthpiece.

I've noticed that this imprint is only on my Rico Reserve X10 and X25e mouthpieces, but not on Vandoren mouthpieces. This is probably because of softer hard rubber Daddario uses.

Try wiping it off.

Hmmm..........

Do you take the reed off at the end of a session and swab? It almost looks like "image burn." I know that vulcanized rubber effervesces. Maybe it is the chemicals coming off the mouthpiece and getting "trapped" by the plastic reed. Of course that should take some time. I would think even is you use the exact same reed but take it off and reapply at every use that should not happen.

But let us know!

I played at a gig on Saturday night, from 8.pm until 4.am in the morning. We played 45 minutes and 15 minutes break. During each break I wiped my mouthpiece and reed from condensation. But this looks like image burn and I can't wipe it off. Maybe I need to use more pressure during the cleaning.

I really don’t think this is permanent. I’m also not sure there's an objective basis for concluding that D'addario rubber is softer than what’s used in Vandorens.

Ok, true funny story. I just went to rinse my mouthpiece (Fobes C12) and low and behold there was the image of the European Signature that was just on it! Of course it just wiped off with the lukewarm water and a paper towel.

I guess I just never noticed. There is no harm to the mouthpiece at all. Of course there is ALWAYS minute wear to the side and tip rails over time with any reed plastic or cane. Ten year down the road, your facing will not be quite the same as it was new. That's just standard wear and tear.
