Just an idea I would like to share: playing Schubert's "Shepherd on the Rock" with the clarinet not visible -in the wings. I got the the idea from the offstage cor anglais solo in the 3rd act of Wagner's Tristan and tried it with "Shepherd" once, many years ago. The shepherd is, after all, in the distance. The audience seemed to respond favourably to the idea.
Soon, I will no longer be playing "th Shepherd on the Hill", but rather the shepherd over the hill!

Interesting idea, however the clarinet part is a true obligato part, and for me the close proximity and contact with the soprano seems most appropriate.
ps and it also gives the singer a chance to look admiringly at you when playing those longer solo passages

The opening might be a little dull for the audience in the opening clarinet solo. It is unlike opera where they can look at something on stage.

Ed: They can look at the soprano. Most sopranos look better than me, at least I hope they do.

The music, which is the important thing, treats the two voices as equal. There is an account of Handel once picking up a soprano and dropping her into the orchestra pit, though; maybe that would be a better idea.
