Vanhal (Wanhal) Op.20 Trios for Clarinet, Violin and Piano
Author: Mark Cookson
Date:   2019-02-11 14:37

I'm looking for clarinet, violin and cello pieces for a high school student trio, and they need something less technically demanding than the 20th century ones I own. I've been listening to the Op. 20 Trios by Johann Baptist Vanhal and they are a possibility.

Op. 20 No. 5 is available from Schott with the unfigured bass line realised as a keyboard part, but does anyone know whether any of the other Op. 20 trios have been published with similarly realised keyboard parts?

The Op. 20 trios have been recorded with a piano realisation of the bass line on a Czech Radio CD performed by Jan Budín, Josef Kekula and Vladimír Leixner, but I haven't been able to find sheet music for any but No. 5.

Hi Mark... The music library at CCM (College conservatory of music, University of Cincinnati) had at least one of there... I recall there being several but it WAS 22 years ago. If you can access their catalogue (I think it is the "Giorno music library") that might have publisher details etc.
Donald (remember me? Congrats on getting Principal with OW)

You could also use the Mozart Kegelstatt, taking the viola part to cello. Several of Max Bruch’s Eight Pieces for Cl/vla/pa could also work as well in the same way.

Not exactly answering your question, but options for to consider.

Thanks Donald, yes of course I remember you! It looks as though No. 5 is the only one that has had a piano part realised for it, so I'll try that out on them.
There are plenty of other possibilities, but the attraction of the Vanhal is that it wouldn't be too challenging for the pianist!

How skilled is the pianist in the areas of theory and composition? It would be a good learning experience for him/her to create a realised part for one of the other trios. Or this task could be assigned to a student who isn't a pianist, but is knowledgeable about theory and composition.
