I recently lost the cap for my Gigliotti ligature. I see that I can no longer buy them new. Can anybody recommend a cap that will fit more-or-less properly until I settle on a new ligature? Thanks.

You might be able to use one of the older-style Rovner caps - they're narrower than the newer ones like Versa and Versa X. I have here a ligature from a Rovner 1R ("Dark") and another that I think is a Rovner "Light" - both caps fit over my Gigliotti ligature mounted with a reed on a mouthpiece. I also have another older Rovner cap (no ligature) that fits. The caps all have numbers inside the top - the "Dark" is a 7, the "Light" is a 4, and the loose one is a 2.
I don't know for certain, but I suspect you may have to buy the whole ligature to replace the cap. I don't think they're still being made, so as you say you'll have to find someone selling either a used one or old stock.

The cap I use as "generic" for just about everything is the Vandoren Leather Cap (sold for their leather ligature). It is like a little Darth Vader helmet that hold on via a foam rubber surround on the inside. I haven't bought a new one in many years and they still hold on my mouthpieces great.
Another cheaper option is the Silverstein (believe it or not) rubber mouthpiece cap. It is short and will work with ANYTHING. Of course if you need a cap to protect the length of the mouthpiece's facing while a reed is NOT on, this is not a good option (too short).

Yeah, I use the Silversteins exclusively now. They don't fall off as easily, they keep the reed at least as moist, and you can't split reeds or gouge mouthpieces with them.

That’s a shame. The Gigliotti ligature cap is the single greatest cap in the history of inverted ligatures.

Yeah, the anti-clatter is the best! You can drop either the Silverstein or the Vandoren Leather right at the beginning of Firebird Suite and NO ONE would know.
