I have a Bundy bass clarinet that I’d like to use but it has some tuning issues. With the mouthpiece and neck pushed all the way in, it plays nearly a quarter tone sharp. To get it in tune, I have to pull the neck out until it reaches the point where air would begin to leak out the slit in the body left for tightening the neck in and I have to pull the mouthpiece out a few mm. The instrument is in tune with itself so I think it might be because the neck is too short. Would getting a new neck resolve this issue? If it can, how can I find a better neck (length, fit, etc)

The necks you can get from China for $60 are a bit longer than stock. The only problem is you will need to sand down the metal tenon a bit. You can also have the neck socket removed and glued in a bit higher. I did this to a Yamaha 221 with great results.

Is there any way to make sure that the new neck is longer than the current one I have since it has a different curvature?

This is great info to have on hand if I get a Yammie....because I had read that they played quite sharp and were hard to get down to A440. But I don't know what a socket is, being unfamiliar with clarinets in general, and wouldn't moving something like that leave a gap where the "bottom" of it used to be if it is moved "higher?"

The socket is the metal tube with a screw on it at the top of the upper joint (only on bass clarinet). It's job is to hold the neck in place.
The gap that is created can be filled with a small piece of 1" od tubing. You could also probably leave the gap without much (if any) negative consequences.

Thanks. I still have a hankering to give the old college try to bass clarinet should I find one I can reach, and this will help if I find I can reach one that happens to plays impossibly sharp.
