Thought you'd be interested in this list of 5 Middle Eastern Clarinetists. Husnu and Vassilis are the main names, but Ismael is the new up and coming guy.

Thank you for sharing. I doubt we hear enough of what goes on outside the standard "Western" clarinet scene!

Kinan Azmeh is another fantastic Middle Eastern clarinetist! Hailing from Syria and then training in New York at Juilliard, he's a fantastic player, improviser, and composer!

What I want to know is ... how are they getting that tone on a variety of clarinets (boehm, reform boehm and even albert)!? It sounds like a cross between an oboe, saxophone and violin to me!

My "guess" is that they are using a very diffuse voicing of the airstream with a rather close-faced mouthpiece and a soft reed...

...or not?

Any ideas?

I also notice they use a lot of half-holing, often of several tone-holes at a time. I presume this is because the modality of the music is very different from the western modality for which these clarinets are made. If so, this must make rapid technique very difficult.

When I went into a music shop in Istanbul the only clarinet on offer was in G. I bought a reed to bring back - only one on offer was strength 1 1/2. A few days later when I showed it to my teacher, she made me throw it away immediately because of extensive mould!

Is that Fred Ormand at the Los Angeles gig? Think I it is. One of the very best instructors still going strong! Great man!

I also notice that they all seem to use barrel-mounted pickups for amplification. I have been thinking of buying one, but just lazy...does anyone here have experience with them, e.g.
http://PiezoBarrel.com
From the videos posted at this site, I suspect that these recordings also benefit from the frequency response of these pickups.

...thoughts?

Of these players' countries, only Turkey belongs to the Middle East.

You're right of course. The web page actually says " ... in the Middle Eastern Style ..." and " ... showcase how the instrument has been played in a Middle Eastern Musical context, across different cultures."
