good reasonably priced recorder?

I searched, but the newest thread I could find was 2012 and technology changes fast. I am looking for a good quality digital recorder primarily to record myself when I am practicing as well as for auditions that are sent by email in wav format. I have been using my smartphone or occasionally a video recorder to do this in the past, but I don't feel the sound quality is as good is it could be.

Does anyone have any recommendations? And how big a difference in quality is there between recorders like the Zoom H2, Tascam DR and my Samsung Note?

I specifically want something that as accurately as possible reflects my true tone quality. I want to keep it reasonable as well, $100-150 max.

I have had very good luck with the Tascam recorders. My DR-1 and DR-07 are both completely functional and produce nearly professional level recordings with the built-in microphones or an Audio-Technica Pro24 stereo condensor which is a great upgrade.

The current DR-05 provides 96kHz/24-bit which is what I use in my studio and costs $99. I'm not thrilled with the microphone layout on it as it likely adds some phase offset in 'up close' recording, but for ambient sound field it's fine.

The DR-40 adds some useful bells and whistles and a better power/battery solution, but probably does not produce better recordings although it is still only $179.

I know a bunch of people that have bought Zoom products and they are mostly disappointed with the reliability and the quality, but YMMV.

The Samsung NOTE is OK for capturing sound at MP3 fidelity, but my experience with all the portables is the microphone does not have the sensitivity and a touchscreen is no substitution for dedicated control buttons.

My recommendation would be to buy a DR-05 and use a little of the savings for a decent tripod or mic stand.
