Dear community members, I wanted to write and inform the community that my clarinets were stolen from my house recently. I had a pair of Patricola CL2 clarinets (a Bb with silver plated keys, an A with gold plated keys; both in black wood, in their backpack double case), an R13, an E11, and a small, old Eb clarinet in an old case with "USM" on it. Somewhat humorously, they did not take the alto clarinet I have.
I'm not really sure where to go from here. I am currently living in a religious house for the present year starting about 2 months ago and I got this news yesterday from my father. The police suspected that someone broke into a kitchen window and took these, along with a few other things, mostly electronics and some college pins and such. Luckily all of it (except for the guitar from my late mother) can be replaced, but it's very saddening and I wanted to let you know since the Patricola's aren't too common here in the US. If you see anything odd like these floating around the internet please do let me know.

Sorry for your loss. What area are you from - they may end up around your area and we can be on the outlook. Around here they are drug addicts looking for some quick drug money.

That's terrible.
I'm sure you've already thought of it, but go to all the pawn shops in your area and inform them of the situation. Tell them if someone comes in trying to sell these specific clarinets to keep them busy and call the police. Also might be a good idea to offer a no questions asked reward.
I check eBay often so I'll be sure to keep my eyes out for them.

I, too, am saddened at your loss and I sincerely hope that you will be able to recover at least some of what you lost.
IMHO, all of the advice you have received from the above responders are absolutely "spot on".
I also look upon your posting as a kind of "warning" to all musicians who have instruments of high financial value. To those who fall into this category, may I suggest the following: Although this is usually for insurance purposes, but, do you have pictures of your instruments especially showing the serial numbers? If not, how can you claim something was stolen from you if you have no proof that it truly is yours? Are your expensive instruments "insured"? Is your home securely alarmed? Are your instruments appropriately "secured" under lock and key or some other method? If you are going away for a rather extended period of time, would it not be better to leave your valuable instruments some other place which you deem to be more secure than your home? Some people may not know this, but it is not an uncommon practice to notify your local police department that you are going away for a specified period of time. I have read that some police departments will send a cruiser down your street more often to give a "quick look over" a person's home if they have been notified.
Robert, may I offer you some advice from an old man of 71? Life indeed goes on. When my rented house burnt to the ground around 40 years ago, I thought it was "the end of my world" because I had no renters insurance. Today, I live in my own home which is much better than the one that I rented so long ago.
Yes, it does hurt to be violated in the manner that you were. It is not "unmanly" to shed tears if you feel the need to do so. I have shed many a tear with all that I've been through in my life. I have found it to be a very effective way to release whatever pain I may have been feeling at the time. This is a natural response found in babies that somehow, someway, gets lost as a person grows older.

This is indeed terrible news but to comfort you a bit, you might think that in comparison to high-end gold flutes and bassoons, your clarinets are not that valuable. Nevertheless, hope you will find them soon.

Thank you all for your advice. It is very helpful. David, I only have the serial numbers of the Patricolas, they are 7213 (for the A) and 7221 (for the Bb). I have very limited access to computers these days so don't have much ability to get to the website myself - thank you very, very much for posting this info there. It is a great assistance.

Dear all, I just wanted to let you know that I have found the Patricola clarinets. I found the A clarinet for sale online, being sold by a full service music store in Cleveland. Hopefully the rest can be recovered, as they have full details on the person who sold it to them. The store manager said they've already sold the Bb but I am hopeful that it can be recovered as well. Will let you know! Not sure how that works legally, however since a police report, with serial numbers, was filed I hope for the best.

If there's a police report etc, you'll get the instruments back (in THIS country at least). Many years ago I walked into a store and unexpectedly saw one of my surfboards (stolen a year previously) for sale, so (although the comparison is not really appropriate) I know how this feels!
You SHOULD be able to get the B flat if the store has a record of who it was sold to, although I doubt that the "full details on the person who sold it" will result in prosecution (unless the thief was super duper idiotic).

Well I don’t know if it’s the same everywhere, but when I sold some gear to my local music store they went as far as printing a paper copy of my driver’s license, along with taking down other information about me to have in their system.

Thanks, Dan! Yes, Fernando, the manager I spoke with said they always take full copies of Drivers Licenses, etc. and had it for the guy who sold my instruments to them. I spoke with the detective today and it seems that Ohio laws have a sort of "gray area" on return of stolen goods (that is, with or without reimbursement to the store), but if I pursue it to the fullest extent, I should get them back without having to pay for them. I'll let you know what happens. Still three instruments and a miscellany of other things out there but hopefully that can track this guy down.

I imagine any thieves worth 10c would fence goods with a stolen or fake ID (as happened in my case- but they STILL got the guy), but your country is so huge that it is probably easier to fence goods without them being traced so maybe they'd take the risk....
