 Repaired with rivet
Author: nevle

Hi, I am just a beginner, took a gamble and bought my first instrument (Vito)from ebay last week. All appears to be good, I can get all the notes(mostly !) and all keys seem to work, it also seems in tune. For a learner all good BUT see photos of register hole. WHAT??Seems to be an old repair but I don't know what to do about it if anything. Any advise?

That looks like a normal register vent tube (see http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/download.html/1,3963/DSCs-02532.JPG in this thread http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=414587&t=414486).

oh no, sorry i didnt know if it was normal/usual or was some sort of botched repair. Do all clarinets have this, what is the purpose?

All clarinets have it. The register key hole functions as both the register mechanism and the throat tone Bb -- a compromised position.

The register vent extending into the instrument facilitates the register function.

Indeed, all clarinets have this. Its purpose is to allow for a comfortable register jump (a twelfth) and it serves also as a tone hole for Bb4.

It's also like that to help prevent water from running into the tube, but condensation will still form in there.
