 Unstable altissimo E
Author: saxlite

Repair customer having problems with altissimo E too easily breaking into higher harmonics. R-13 with M13 Lyre mpc, V-12 3.5+ reeds. Clarinet has been carefully checked- no leaks, pad heights OK. Interestingly, I had the same issue with my very different mouthpiece and reed. The only thing I could see is that the register tube seems larger in diameter than most R13's I've seen. Has anybody got a cure for this?

To see if the register tube is the problem, you could try substituting a tube with more standard, known diameter.

Is there any tape (or dirt) in LH index finger tone hole?

How have you checked for leaks? Magnahelic? Leak light? Suction? Feeler? Some or all of the above? Would the method you used account for the air tightness of the pads themselves (leak light and feeler would not)?

A distant possibility - is the spring tension on the F#3/C#5 pad enough? That's the pad you open to deliberately make E6 jump to A6.

Should we assume from your description that the surrounding altissimo notes are stable - D6, Eb6, F6, F#6?

I used to have the same problem. I try my best to not pinch when I get to those high notes. Try curling in more, or curling less with your lips.
