Hello everyone,
I wanted to ask if anyone here know what material is applied to the bore right after making it.
I searched a lot online and especially here, and found only discussions on how to preserve an existing clarinet bore.
I've recently started to produce barrels and bells for clarinet [for fun, not commercially], and I want to know how to treat the bare wood, mainly the bore.
And one more question. about the exterior, I read here and on the site of chsash that carnauba wax [100%] is excellent for the wood, so I debated between car wax and natural wax. Then when I realized that I do not know they put in the paste even though it is 100%. So i got some carnaube flakes.
The problem is that I can not figure out exactly how to work with it, what solvent to use to soften it, and did I understand it right and wax is the only thing I aplly to the wood?

I've tried for years to find what manufacturers use, but have become convinced that most use no finish whatsoever. The best method I've found for polishing bores is to mount a 20 gauge shotgun cleaning swab on my lathe and spin it at high speed. You can apply beeswax to the swab at this point for a better finish. I then take the barrel or joint and run it back and forth over the spinning swab. This will leave it with a mirror like finish inside the bore.
Probably not the "right" way to do it but it's the setup I use. I mostly use this method for instruments with poorly finished bores.

I made a boxwood classical clarinet on a course at Cambridge Woodwind Makers.
We put the part finished joints in tung oil under vacuum overnight. They fizzed as the air is sucked out of the wood. We also put a thicker test piece in to see how far it penetrated. I can't remember exactly but it went a good few mm. Longer might have been better but, on a course, overnight was all we could do.
I don't know if that will work as well for blackwood since it's considerably denser, but it can't do any harm.

Buffet finishes the bore with some kind of wax. Occasionally some traces of it can be seen on new clarinets. It is dark in color. I have used beeswax on the bore and some commercial products on the outside that have a solvent.

Most makers oil the bore after reaming and polishing it and the exterior is buffed to a deep shine (using around three or more different polishing stages starting with Tripoli and finishing with a soft swansdown mop), whereas some are left with a matt finish and the outside is oiled.
Some makers stain (Buffet) or paint (Schreiber) the outside to make it all look uniform instead of showing off the natural gran and colour differences in the wood.
There are also makers that lacquer the bore to seal it.

Wow guys, thanks for the quick responses, although I'm a bit confused right now
Chris, at first I put polyurethane varnish on the barrel [inside and outside] and then a friend told me it was clogging the wood and I assumed it was not good for a musical instrument ... maybe not good for sound, or imprisons moisture inside
Do you think it's okay, that it might even be desirable?

HiI´am not a profesional in woodwind, but profesionel in wood.
please don´t use a hard finish, like polyurethane, because the wood will always "work" a bit, so a hard finish will brake and wettness can get to the wood and will not dry later. So use an oil o a wax, I use oil. New parts of an instrument I let some days complet in oil. Use a liquid oil, what will penetrate the wood well

el gitano, what oil do you recomend, tik oil, tung oil, almond oil, something else?
And about the wax, I did something cool and it seemed to work
I took the carnauba flakes and put them on a cloth
Then I melted them into the cloth with a heat blower
And I pressed this cloth against the barrel as it turned on the lathe,
So the wax melted back and went down to the wood
I hope it's good enough
