 Uses for old reeds?
Author: Fuzzy

Do any of you have innovative uses for old reeds? (I'm not talking about the old, gunky ones...but perhaps the "one-try" reed that clearly wasn't worth the effort to "fix" or was beyond repair, etc.)

I've always figured there must be a good use for them, but I've never come up with anything other than the off-attempt to use them as scrapers/spreaders of glue, etc.

I think, sterilized first, there should be a collective of reeds people find initially bad. I really do wonder if one player's junk is another player's treasure.

I use old or unplayable reeds as glue spreaders when recorking. Also, if you split them into slivers with a blade or craft knife they are useful for moving pads into place when repadding.

Glue spreaders, wedges and also for spreading gold paste into engraved or deeply stamped logos when restoring them (not always possible on Buffets).

Building little barn fires works great.

I have an 8 HP leaf and wood chipper that cuts the reeds up, then I spread the reed chips on our rhododendrons in the fall for spectacular blooms in the spring! ATTT.

John:

Do you find the tossed and chipped Aria's, Steuer's, Pilgerstofer and Leuthners help the Rhodendrons grow better than the Vandorens?

I know my old Legeres work great on plastic flowers.

I'm told that parrots like to splinter them.

I'm not sure I would risk running discarded orange-box Ricos through a wood chipper. The motor might go out of tune...
