 Loose Barrel Joint Cork
Author: BGBG

I suddenly had a barrel upper joint tenon cork come loose but not torn or coming off-just rotating. Was stuck and when applied more pressure must have loosened cork. Usually apply Dr Slick cork grease to index finger and rub on corks when assemble. Medium effort to take apart or assemble.Clarinet is Buffet E11 2.5 years old with no problems up to now and played a short time daily. For past few days I had let it sit on stand after swabbing in a room that reads 30-35% RH and put in case at night. Unsure if too much or too little grease, sitting open in the dry air, or simply time and use caused this. I would like to know what to do. Whether to have it repaired, play until it comes off, use more or less grease, or put it in case after each play as I had been doing. I do not wish to just drop it off and let it be sent somewhere for a good or bad job but know no techs nearby. If ask individual techs they bad mouth the instrument dealers whether true or not and makes me distrust both. If recommendation is to have it repaired now or soon, has anyone used a repair tech near zip code 18974 where I could expect a good and reasonable cost repair? And what should such a repair be expected to cost ball park figure. Do not want it ruined but do not want to neglect it either. Looking for recommendations. Thanks.

If it's rotating you can't very well use it that way. When I have a cork come loose, if it isn't torn, I cut it cleanly with a knife, take it off and apply a fresh coat of contact cement to both the cork and the tenon surface. With contact cement, you wait a few minutes until both surfaces have lost their gloss, then carefully press the cork back onto the tenon.

If the cork is torn and any of it is missing, this won't work so well. You can build the tenon up with tightly wound teflon tape or (more old-fashioned) thread as an emergency fix. But both tend to bunch up as you put the joint together and take it apart.

If you re-cement the cork and it seems to hold, you don't really need to have anything else done until next time the clarinet is in a repair shop for something more serious.

I might be inclined to try this as I am fairly handy and have some contact cement. Do you suggest deciding and doing before further use, as I am afraid if continue using the cork might tear even though it is not torn or broken now. and I checked all the other corks and they are tight. The upper cork has never been hard to place or remove barrel and maybe it is nothing I did or failed to do at all. I put the barrel on then off once and had no trouble but believe I should not continue.

I see this all the time. Too much cork grease causes the glue to loosen the cork from the clarinet. If you cut it off and re-attach it, it will probably leak at the seam where you cut it.

Have a good repair tech replace the cork. I recommend cork grease no more than once a week.

Teflon tape works great.

Most cork grease has solvents in it that seep into the cork and dissolve the cement. Doctor's is supposed to avoid that.

This is great video about how to replace corks.

Don't use alchohol on plastic bodies, it makes them brittle. Also, it's way easy to burn the cork or instrument when applying the wax. You can skip the wax.

Searched the forum and read where someone had soaked tenon cork end in glass of water half hour. I tried this and it tightened up again. But is this harmful to the wood?

Tenon cork replacement is super easy. Most shops around here charge about $10. I can replace and fit a tenon cork in under 10 minutes. You might just try it yourself. Plenty of videos that show how.

Cork, Razor Blade, Contact Cement and a strip of sandpaper..

If I buy cork what type should I get? Natural cork like at WWBW or other sellers? I think I should have some in case of problems. Existing seems very thin. Have read there are several different types.

What width and thickness cork should I get for this? Measures 12 mm wide.
Standard thickness 3/64"/1.2 mm; Thin 1/32"/.8 mm; Extra Thick 1/16"/1.6 mm. At this website:

Music Medic and others sell a kit or just the tenon cork. You just measure the width you need and then cut it. Plenty of videos on line
