 Buffet Crampone...Help...

Hi...
I am new to this forum and am asking for some help to try and identify a Buffet Crampon clarinet.
I have tried to read through questions and answers on this topic, but am getting confused...I confuse easily...
The clarinet is made from Grenadilla wood...is marked with (stamped/impressed) "Buffet Crampon & C, A. Paris" as well as the serial number 29752. There are no other markings as suggested in the other forum conversations to indicate a model number.
If anyone can suggest a website or may be able to provide info on this...please let me know here or via email.
Thanks in advance.

Steve

From my records that serial number indicates a clarinet made in 1946.
So this is one of the pre R13 polycylindrical models introduced in the early 1950s (although confusingly the catalog no. R13 was sometimes used in earlier years for the pre-polycylindrical clarinets).

I think all those earlier clarinets would have been regarded as professional instruments in their day.

Thanks for the info...would you be able to direct me to the serial number website you are using. I have found several on the net and they are a bit confusing.
Thanks.

With work, this could be one heck of a horn. Straight bores produced beautiful big sounds. In the wrong hands a repairman can screw it up.

For example the Yamaha CSG clarinet is a straight bore and the sound quality and evenness of each note is spot on. The older Buffet's have their challenges with dead notes and out of tune 10ths. This can be adjusted, it may not be perfect, but the sound quality should be warmer compared to the Yamaha horns.

The cost to get one of these horns working really well might be around $500, plus a barrel and a bell, so add another $300.

Thanks Bob and Norman...above...
As a complete novice here, I am, I think getting mixed signals that this horn is either a polycylindrical or straight bore type.
Anyone can send me to a site to confirm?
Thanks!!

Without intending any disparagement at all, I'm wondering whether or not you like the instrument. If you do, I'm wondering why, other than maybe simple curiosity, it matters if the bore is cylindrical or polycyclindrical. It's apparently an old clarinet - Norman has dated it in the late 1940s or early 1950s. It will play the same way, whether the bore is polycyclindrical or not, so if you like the way it plays, maybe it doesn't matter. :)

I think (but may be corrected by people here who are more knowledgeable about clarinet design) that you can maybe get an answer about the bore shape by measuring the top and bottom bore openings of the upper section. Both of my regular clarinets are Selmer 10Gs, which are definitely polycylindrical. On both, the top (entry) bore is measurably larger (using a vernier caliper) than the bottom (exit) opening. My understanding is that a cylindrical bore would measure more uniformly until the bottom flare begins somewhere in the lower section. If you have a caliper, you might check and see how your Buffet measures.
