Hi there,
I recently bought a Clarinet online for my daughter - it was advertised as a "Buffet Crampon B12 Student Clarinet".
When I received it, I checked the serial number against the Buffet Crampon website and it came back with "No instrument found".
After a bit of searching and reading I saw that Buffet outsourced some of their Clarinet manufacturing to Schreiber in Germany before they acquired the company.
So long story short - I'm trying to identify a Clarinet that was sold to me as a Buffet-Crampon B12 but the only marking that are visible to me are "Made in Germany" and the serial number which is 7 digits 1037xxx.
Can anyone help identify it?

It sounds like a bog standard Buffet B12 student clarinet.
A 7 digit serial would indicate relatively recent manufacture, certainly within past 5 -10 years.
The B12 markings on later instruments were only gold coloured transfers so probably wore off.
These are indeed made by Schreiber in Germany for the French Buffet company and badged as Buffet Paris, though clearly not actually Buffet and certainly never seen Paris.

They were my thoughts as well - without the gold coloured transfer I was hoping to be able to validate the serial number. Thanks Norman

Just laid my hands on my personal serial number book.
I always used to record the ser nos of instruments passing through my workshop to augment whatever published data existed until I retired 12/2015.
B12 No. 791xxx was circa 3/2003
B12 No. 1096xxx was circa 2011/12
so looks like yours is about 2010/11

Hello! I saw your post and was hoping you could help me. I purchased a clarinet, described as an Artley. But the SN does not fall into the range of numbers I found for Artley. If I gave you the serial number, would you be able to at least identify the manufacturer, if not the model? I think the gentleman I purchased it from purchased it from someone who just stuck it in an Artley case. Thanks so much!

Me again. I guess it would be helpful if I gave you the serial number, huh? 7075671. No identifying marks on the bell or throat.

Post a photo as it can be identified by the keywork and fittings. A lot of plastic clarinets have the logos printed on and they wear off leaving nothing to identify them besides the keywork and serial number.

Hi there !
I also have a question regarding the 7 digit number printed into the wood of a second hand Buffet R13 ( 1131 L -2-0 ) I have ordered through Aliexpress .
It appears in one of the closeup photos of the instrument and is below the thumb rest with " R13" above it and " MADE IN FRANCE" just below .
The number reads " 0103368 " . If one is supposed to just disregard the first zero , then it seems to square up as a 1968 made instrument , but I'm now nervous that there should be no more that 6 digits printed on a genuine French made buffet .It otherwise looks to me like the genuine article with the correct Buffet logo followed by " MADE IN FRANCE " printed into the wood of all the segments . Could the clarinet I have bought be a fake however ?

No R13 will have a 7 figure serial number starting with a 0 and genuine ones from the past couple or so decades are only marked R13 on the back of the barrel and bell. The ONLY places it will say 'Made in France' are under the logos stamped on the barrel, top joint, lower joint and bell.
And it's most likely to be a fake if you ordered it from Aliexpress as practically all the big name instruments on there (Buffet, Keilwerth, Selmer, Yamaha and Yanagisawa) are fakes.
This is a lesson learnt the hard way.

Chris beat me to it. Aliexpress is not the place to buy genuine, brand-name anything.

Thank you for the feedback although it was not what I wanted to hear .
I will post a report on the instrument when it arrives for those who are interested .
If it is a fake it's a very convincing one . Don't know it Buffet should be litigating or contracting whoever makes them .
The add for these items is still posted and easy to find under R 13-L . If either of you cares to check it out and give me any additional feedback I would be grateful .

If it is fake then in theory I can return it for a full refund assuming that I can demonstrate that it does not fit the product description. I suppose I wound lose what I pay for import duty and the process will be a big drag .
All evidence of it not being what it claims to be will no doubt be of help for that .
It's a pity that buyers of these instruments through Aliexpess don't bother to post more reviews and comments as this would go a long way to reducing fraud .

I'm actually not on Facebook Chris , ( but I guess I could be )
People hit on this forum however ( as I did ) researching the buying of a second hand instrument .
Perhaps a title here dealing with the matter of scams on Aliexpess would be very helpful to a lot people out there .
I was aware that 350€ was a suspiciously low price for an R13 , even second hand . But I supposed that any unpleasant surprises would take the form of a cracked body section or excessive wear in the keywork . I would have been ok with that as it can be repaired . Fake just did not occur to me until later .
