Here is the audition list!
http://www.marineband.marines.mil/Portals/175/Docs/Career%20Information/2016%20Clarinet%20Audition.pdf?ver=2016-08-03-082349-463
I haven't played Symphonie Fantastique in many years, is this part where you have to transpose to the C clarinet? YIKES! lol
The sight reading isn't usually sight reading. You usually have to know a bit about the pieces. Something like Pines of Rome, Beethoven's 6th, something like that. I couldn't help noticing that Capriccio espagnol wasn't listed so I bet that will be a sight reading piece.
I know that one player auditioning has a doctorate in music. So it's hard to get in to say the least and he's already in the military. An Air Force musician. Things sure have changed since I was in! The good news is they sometimes take 2 players.
Forgive me here, I just can't help thinking about this, so my mind is wondering!

There will be times where they won't select anyone. So it's not like they HAVE to pick the winner.

They don't go snobby like some Orchestral ones go. EVERY military band has the potential to go snobby. Special ones included.

Bob -
The C clarinet part in Symphonie Fantastique is very brief and easy to transpose. (Nevertheless, it should be played on a C clarinet if possible, so that the fingerings and pitch colors will match the following Eb solo.)
I doubt that anyone who can't transpose C parts could pass the Marine Band audition anyway.

Thanks Ken, haven't played the piece since the late 1970's. I just don't remember it very well.

Really?
I think you forgot about the third movement. (arguably easy to transpose, but *not* brief).

Lewis Gilmore won the audition.

Two people were offered spots. Lewis Gilmore and one other person, but cannot remember her name.
