Mr. Nilsson's advice is good.
Also I look at how quickly the needle goes down. If it gets down to 1 very slowly it may not play well. This will also vary depending on how the machine is set up, so it is learned over time. If it goes down and then blows a pad open, it may or may not be a problem.
I plug the open holes so that I can close the ring keys with very light pressure.
