I have zero experience or background in music.
I'm seeking a recommendation for my daughter's first clarinet.
Thanks,
Abbey

It depends to some extent upon what you want to spend. If you're intending to buy a new instrument then the Buffet E12F would be a good start, as would the Yamaha YCL255, the Jupiter 700 series or the Leblanc Vito. If you want to pay less than new price, then the earlier Yamahas such as the YCL26, YCL24 or C100, the Vito or the earlier Jupiter 637S would be good. I would avoid the Buffet B12, as I believe it was an inferior instrument to any others mentioned here. Don't be put off the idea of buying a used instrument. If you buy it from a reputable seller you will get an instrument of excellent quality for much less than new prices.

IMHO, the Ridenour RCP-576. Won't crack, great intonation, warm sound, non-quirky, very even blowing, low frustration. This would be my first choice. Less than a grand. Call Ted Ridenour ... they have a zero interest finance plan. You might find a used one or discontinued model for even less ...

... the Ridenour RCP-576 ...
I think that would be a great choice, but make sure there is a return policy in case the student can't get a comfortable sound. And try several mouthpieces too. I bought a used Bundy plastic when I resumed playing, and it worked well to get back into the flow. I actually was able to sell it too! That being said, I got an E-11 to replace it later. Being new to buying, it would be helpful to have a player come with you to help make a judgement.
