 Barrel of my Design
Author: MusicalMoon
Date:   2016-09-20 01:34

Hello fellow clarinetists! A while back I designed a couple clarinet barrels that I was never able to produce prototypes of. If any of you have access to 3D printing I'd love to see how the barrel is and what it sounds like. If you're interested, I have uploaded the design on Thingiverse to download for free. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1793047

Cool I'll try one out! If you don't mind me asking, what is the taper on the bore?

Honestly, I made it so long ago I can't remember. When I can I'll put it into CAD and check for you :) I believe I made it as a slight modification of the Buffet ICON, so the taper should be similar.

A couple of my friends here at USC have access to 3D printers, I'll see if it would be possible to print them and try them out.

If you're going to use standard plastics for the model, I would try to avoid ABS unless you account for the shrinkage while modeling. ABS has a noticably higher shrinkage rate than many other materials. If you want to contact me about materials or the process, feel free to!

I was thinking along the lines of nylon or possibly PLA. Would either of those be a decent candidate?

Nylon will also shrink a bit and be more difficult to be post processing work to it, but you can also use color due to make it change different colors, which is cool. The PLA can be a nice option out of standard plastics, particularly because it should come out smoother than the nylon.

Also, if anyone makes one of these and it works but you don't want it I'd be happy to pay shipping to have it sent to me.

I'd be happy to make you one, if you'd like. You can email me if you want to set something up.

At the ClarinetFest my booth was right next to Ryan's.

Sadly I broke some ribs at the airport going to the convention. However Ryan and I were both very busy during this ClarinetFest and I wasn't able to test his barrels or bells due to not being able to inhale or exhale. It took me 5 minutes to put on one shoe!

What I saw was really pretty amazing. 3D printing is here to stay. His material is lightweight and fun! Recently we've connected and will be trading work. I'm looking forward to seeing a special barrel design he is making for me.

A lot of pro's including Michele Zukovski, the retired Los Angeles Philharmonic player that uses German clarinets, which have small barrels, around 57mm's had him make one. I didn't hear a single complaint from anyone.

So if you want to experiment with barrels 3D is the way to go. He punches in the numbers, the tapers, and after a short time the barrel, bell, is done.

Ryan has a nice sound quality which is a must when designing barrels and bells. So Michele didn't have to go to Germany to find a barrel. He made one for her at the show!

I looked through the design in CAD and noticed a few mistakes. I corrected those mistakes and also modified the design a bit and changed the link on my first post. If anyone is still interested in making one, I'd definitely suggest checking out the new link :)
