 lucky score or what?

Recently i was on *that* auction site looking for a clarinet to restore and i saw this robert Marlene clarinet. I decided to buy it for $42 total. It arrived yesterday and is playable, but needs work. As it turns out its actually an A and not a Bb! What are the odds of getting an "A" for such a price?

Sounds good. I'm just reminded of the stories on BBoard about people with an A clarinet who think it's a really out of tune Bb. SMH.

Added pictures. Strangly they did not add to the original post.

Sometimes the unexpected becomes a bonus. Looks like a good instrument.

I had a similar thing happen when I bid and won what was listed as a Selmer Series 9 Voll-Boehm B-Klarinette that was listed in Vienna. When it turned up I noticed the finger spacing was on the wide side and on play testing it to confirm it was an A clarinet I initially contacted the seller about returning it as the description didn't match the instrument .

Then with second thoughts I contacted the seller again as I decided not to return it and instead went to look for a full Boehm Bb to go with it as they're much easier to come by than full Boehm A clarinets which are pretty rare beasts.

So that's an early Series 9 A paired with a late Series 9 Bb to make up the set.

Before eBay existed, I bought what was listed as a Selmer Paris C clarinet off a used instrument message board. I got it for only a couple hundred bucks, probably because the previous owner couldn't get it to play in tune. Turned out to be a D clarinet!
