 ''full'' Albert

I also posted this reply in a thread entitled ''it made me laugh''

That looks to be somewhat of a bargain. I wonder if I could find an Albert system Selmer with a low Eb, such as the one pictured here:

One can obtain full Boehm system instruments easily enough, but this is the first time I have actually seen a picture of a ''full'' Albert, let alone known of their existence.

I've seen one of those on eBay a while back - shame it wasn't a Selmer 'Improved Albert' built to low Eb as that would be a pretty special beast.

They built otherwise plain Boehm systems with an extended range to low Eb as well (without the extra gadgets found on full Boehms).

I think at the time, if you wanted it, Selmer would probably make it. The old catalogues of the time had an impressive range of Boehm and non-Boehm clarinets in any configuration you could think of - maybe even going as far as Albert-Boehm hybrids.

That's very similar to the Selmer 'Improved Albert' system which had all manner of ring keys with extra vents and an articulated C#/G# - but I've only seen them built to low E.

Selmer made a beautiful full-Albert system clarinet with a low Eb-key that I have only seen in photos.

If you google search the following, two photos of this instrument come up:

New Orleans Delight: Bb Wooden full-Albert Clarinet

I get the link for this as the sixth entry on the page that appears after a google search. Sorry I cannot get the direct URL to work. It is part of a blog at jazzkjeld.typepage.com, "New Orleans Delight," for September 2011.

I've just acquired this German system (wouldn't call it Albert) A clarinet by Carl Kruspe (about 1920...25) which goes to deep Eb: Length without mouthpiece 66 cm (German/ Oehler A to E: 63 cm), 6 rings, G#/ A mechanism like on Boehms, extra F#/G# trill, Eb key for right thumb. I don't know what literature this extension was used for- except that the low range is that of the Viola.

One of the German makers offers a low Eb barrel with key (operated with the thumb key) to work with their clarinets - off the top of my head it could be Harald Hüyng.
