 It made me laugh

I needed to replenish some of my instrument maintenance stuff, so I went to the cigarette counter at a general store and asked for a bottle lighter fluid, some pipe cleaners and cigarette papers. A stern looking old lady nearby said, grumpily, "Smoking is a disgusting habit !). What could I say ?!

You should've replied "And so is eavesdropping, madam."

There you have one of many reasons why Jeff Bezos is making money hand over fist with his Amazon.com operation. You can buy what you want without being scolded or harassed (if you don't mind the instrusive ads).

I was of the understanding that Amazon was still to turn a profit?

Ned,

Technically, you're right. For 20 years, the company has remained an unfulfilled promise for investors, yet Bezos himself has risen to something like second richest billionaire in the world. It has become a buyers paradise, though, because it really is a free and open market offering virtually anything that can be sold legally, wihout prejudice. A couple of weeks ago, I bought the second volume of Henri Sarlit's 25 Etudes de Virtuosite for Clarinet (Leduc) from a small seller using the Amazon site for $10.00! Try and find that out of print work anywhere else at that price. Nobody asked me "what do you want that old thing for; why don't you get something new?" That's what I call freedom and opportunity.

That is a funny story, and I'll bet it's happened to other wind instrument players. If a busybody had criticized me that way in public, I might have stopped, smiled gently, looked her right in the eye and explained, with excruciating politeness, how I use these purchases to maintain my clarinets and saxophones. I've found that snarling, calling someone a glass bowl or otherwise expressing perfectly reasonable indignation rarely accomplishes anything except to make preachy people even more self-righteous -- but extravagant civility can sometimes shame jerks into embarrassment. Maybe next time she'd think twice instead of jumping to conclusions.

That looks to be somewhat of a bargain. I wonder if I could find an Albert system Selmer with a low Eb, such as the one pictured here:

One can obtain full Boehm system instruments easily enough, but this is the first time I have actually seen a picture of a ''full'' Albert, let alone known of their existence.

I recall a story of somebody going into a store and buying 20 packs of glueless cigarette paper. The clerk looked at the purchase and said, "I know what you are! A band teacher!"

Until getting burned out by a forest fire, I lived near a small town in the California mountains where the major cash crop is marijuana. One afternoon, I was working on my car and needed to get some parts. Rather than take the time to change, I went into town in my coveralls and in a mild state of disarray. While there, I decided to stop by the convenience store and restock my supply of cigarette papers. I definitely got some strange looks, but said nothing and left them all wondering.
